Allocation or hydrocarbon accounting systems implementation projects are exposed to the same risks as all software projects of significant size: increases in scope, unforeseen complexity and the unavailability of key resources can all have an adverse impact on cost and schedule. The last of these risks is acutely relevant: specialist business knowledge is required to specify, test and roll-out allocation systems and the availability of that knowledge largely determines a project’s capacity to deliver.
